Abstract

1451498 Filtering and settling R E S THOMPSON 27 Dec 1973 59820/73 Heading B1D [Also in Division C1] Solid cellulosic waste material and a liquid waste material comprising entrained solid cellulosic waste are treated in a closed circuit by subjecting the liquid waste to a primary sedimentation to produce an overflow liquid and a wet sludge, dewatering the wet sludge, combining the dewatered sludge with the solid cellulosic waste materials, carbonising this mixture of solid wastes to form charcoal and a heated off-gas, further carbonising at least part of the charcoal to form activated carbon and additional heated off-gas, forming a filter bed of the activated carbon and filtering therethrough the overflow liquid from the primary sedimentation to remove entrained solids, recycling the filter bed and entrained solids to the first carbonising step and combusting the off-gases in a boiler for steam generation.
