Abstract

1451360 Measuring exhalation volume of the lungs JUNGNER INSTRUMENT AB 6 Dec 1973 [12 Dec 1972] 56723/73 Heading A5K A device used in conjunction with a lung ventilator to measure the gas volume exhaled by a patient comprises a rigid container 1 divided into first and second compartments 3, 2 by a partition 4, valves 5 and 8 connecting compartment 3 with the respiratory system of the patient and compartment 2 with atmosphere during exhalation, so that the gas volume exhaled by the patient flows into and inflates compartment 3. When exhalation ceases valves 5 and 8 are returned, in response to the control unit of the ventilator, to their opposing positions wherein compartment 3 is connected to atmosphere, and a device 9 is actuated to inject a constant gas flow into compartment 2, a time measuring device 11 being started. Compartment 3 is thus emptied, under the effect of the constant gas flow into compartment 2, through valve 5 to atmosphere. When compartment 3 is completely empty the gas pressure in compartment 2 rises steeply due to gas flow from device 9, this pressure rise being sensed by a pressure transducer 10 in communication with compartment 2 to produce an electrical output signal stopping the time measuring device 11 and returning valve 8 to its other position wherein gas flow from device 9 into compartment 2 is interrupted and compartment 2 is connected to atmosphere. The time interval measured by time measuring device 11 will be directly proportional to the gas volume expelled from compartment 3 and thus to the gas volume exhaled by the patient, and a direct measure of this gas volume is given by multiplying together the time measured by time measuring device 11 and the rate of constant gas flow from device 9. In a second embodiment (Figure 2 - not shown) a smaller constant gas flow is augmented by ambient air drawn in through an ejector (19) to reduce gas consumption of the measuring device. In this embodiment the time interval measured by the time measuring device (22) is directly proportional to the gas volume exhaled by the patient.
