Abstract

Incrustation and corrosion, preventing. - A metal plate is provided with a superficial layer of a different material by first forming a number of small depressions in the plate by rolling or otherwise in such a way that the bottoms of the depressions are consolidated and of increased density, and then filling the depressions with the desired material. As applied to a bearing surface the metal is formed with a large number of cavities a, Fig. 3, separated by ribs a<1> which are filled with a mixture of graphite and coal tar. The bearing is then bent into cylindrical form, if necessary, and baked in a bed of graphite to volatilize a part of the tar pressure being afterwards applied to compress the material in the cavities. Fig. 1 shows apparatus in which a metal strip A is indented by a roller B and passed through a bath of the filling-material heated by a burner F. On leaving the bath the strip passes between a scraper H and a presser I. The invention is applicable for treating boiler plates with graphite &c. to prevent incrustation.
