Abstract
1451064 Methane-containing gas BRITISH GAS CORP 25 Jan 1974 [30 Jan 1973] 4601/73 Heading C5E Methane-containing gases are produced by passing a gas comprising the vapour of a hydrocarbon feedstock e.g. naphtha, L.P.G., methane, hydrogen and steam into a bed of a steam reforming catalyst and recycling a portion of the gas produced from the catalyst bed back to the inlet of the catalyst bed to be admixed with the gas to be reacted prior to passage of the mixture through the catalyst bed, wherein the temperature of the gas, recyclce gas, or mixture is adjusted such that upon reaction the temperature of the catalyst bed is maintained at not greater than 400‹ C. The methane and hydrogen components of the gas other than the methane and hydrogen present in the recycle gas, are provided by reacting hydrocarbon feedstock vapour and steam over a subsidiary bed of steam reforming catalyst which may be maintained at 400‹ to 800‹C. The hydrocarbon feedstock may be the same to both beds in the ratio, subsidiary to main bed, of 2 : 3 to 2 : 1. A proportion of the main bed product gases and/or the subsidiary bed product gases may be recycled back to the inlet of the subsidiary bed to be admixed with hydrocarbon and steam prior to passing over the subsidiary catalyst. A hydrogen-containing gas, e.g. coke oven gas, may be added to at least one of the gas streams entering either catalyst bed. The hydrogen and methane contents of the gas other than that provided by the recycle gas, to the main bed may be provided by incorporating coke oven gas in the mixture. The catalyst for the beds may be a nickel-alumina coprecipitated catalyst.
