Abstract

1451013 Production of stainless steel in a converter ALLEGHENY LUDLUM INDUSTRIES Inc 17 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 26671/74 Heading C7D Stainless steel is produced in a converter by providing a charge that is at least partly liquid and suitable for producing a chromium containing stainless steel in an oxygen steel converter having a tuyere in its bottom section, providing a subatmospheric pressure in the converter (e.g. 100 m.m. Hg absolute), introducing oxygen through a lance on to or beneath the surface of the charge, introducing an inert gas (e.g. argon or nitrogen at 5-100 SCFM and 100 psi) or an endothermic gas (e.g. water vapour or CO 2 ) through the tuyere and recovering the stainless steel. A flow of CO 2 , air, N2 or argon may be maintained through the tuyere during changing of the converter which may be tilted to prevent blockage of the tuyere and natural gas may be admixed with the argon entering the melt after the oxygen blow to assist in deoxidation of the melt. Further refining steps involving reducing slags, refining slags and further alloy additions for final composition adjustment may be carried out prior to the tapping of the stainless steel melt obtained.
