Abstract

1450904 Securing sprocket wheels; variable speed gear A PHILPOTT and R S FUHER 21 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 55542/73 Addition to 1410756 Headings F2U and F2D The sprocket wheel assembly disclosed in the parent Specification is improved by releasably locking a secondary sprocket wheel 12 on to the shaft portion 13 of a primary sprocket wheel 11 in the desired angular position by means of, for example, a clamp 21. The shaft portion 13 of tubular form is inserted into a bore 16a of a sleeve 14 which is slit at 18, 19 and 20 and provided with flats 24, 25 for receiving clamp plates 22, 23. The bolts 28, 29 of the clamp pass through recesses 30 in the sleeve and engage in a circumferential groove 31 in the shaft portion so that the sprocket wheel 11 can be adjusted rotationally and prevented from moving axially. The modified transmission assembly shown comprises a chain 60 which passes over primary sprocket wheel and a first sprocket wheel 51, a chain 61 which passes over primary sprocket wheel 57 and the first sprocket wheel 51, a chain 62 which passes over secondary sprocket wheel 12 and second sprocket wheel 53, and a chain 63 which passes over secondary sprocket wheel 58 and the second sprocket wheel 53. Sprocket wheels 70 ... 73 serve to increase the wrap and adjust the tension of the chains. After the relative angular positions of the sprocket wheels 11, 12 have been automatically adjusted by rotating the input shaft 54, the clamp 21 is actuated to grip the sleeve 14 on the shaft portion 13.
