Abstract

1450594 Removing metal by fusion; making capacitors SIEMENS AG 29 Oct 1973 [29 Jan 1973] 50153/73 Headings B3V and B3A A metal free strip 7 on a metallized surface of an insulating foil 2 is produced by continuously leading the foil 2 past an electrode 4 to which are applied voltage pulses having a duration of less than 5 Ásec. and a frequency of more than 100 kHz so that areas of the metallization removed during consecutive pulses overlap. At least one electrode 4, comprising a tungsten wire having a semi-spherical tip or one or more J-shaped tungsten wires arranged side-by-side, is pressed by a spring 5 against a moving foil 2 having an aluminium surface at a point immediately after the point where the foil 2 leaves contact with a roller 1. The electrode 4 is connected via a resistor to one pole of a voltage pulse source and the roller 1 and a second roller 3 which contacts the metallization of the foil 2 are connected to the other pole of the source. Voltage pulses having an amplitude of at least 40 v. are applied to the electrode 4, which may simultaneously divide the foil 2 for subsequent production into capacitors. To produce a desired pattern of the metal free strip 7, the electrode 4 may be moved transversely of and lifted from the foil 2 and the voltage supply to the electrode 4 discontinued. The aluminium from the foil 2 is removed by wiping, blowing or suction.
