Abstract

1450583 Electro-deposition; electrolytic production M GINATTA 20 Sept 1973 [20 Sept 1972] 44126/73 Heading C7B The operation and yield of an electrolytic cell e.g. for electro-deposition of metal or production of substances is optimized by measuring the energy on the surface of a thermo-electrode comprising a junction of two different materials generating thermo-electric effects and serving as the working electrode of the cell, calculating therefrom the value of the excess energy for a given electrochemical reaction, which value determines the electric charge transfer coefficient # of the reaction, and controlling the operation of the cell according to the value #. As shown thermo-electrode 5, comprising four parallel conductors 1-4 interconnected at one set of extremities to form a junction 5a, and cylindrical counter-electrode 6, connected to D.C. source 8, are immersed vertically and concentrically in an electrolyte vat 7. Coulometer 9 measures the charge rate at the thermoelectrode 5, voltmeter 10 measures the PD between the electrodes and electrometer 11 measures the electro-motive force generated by the thermoelectric couple formed by conductors 2, 3 with junction 12 placed underneath counter-electrode 6 in electrolyte inlet 17 in which are also sensors 13, 15 for controlling electrolyte velocity (device 13a) by pump 14 and temperature (device 15a) by heat exchanger 16; electrolyte ion concentration is selectively measured (devices 18a, 19a) by electrodes 18, 19.
