Abstract

1450577 Measuring the size of subterranean cavities BRITISH GAS CORP 9 Aug 1974 [13 Aug 1973] 38207/73 Heading H4D In a device for measuring the size of subterranean cavities radiation from a mercury arc lamp 13, 14 is directed via a lens 15 and a continuously (or stepwise) rotatable mirror 6 to the wall of the cavity P and the reflected light is received by a photodiode or a photomultiplier 19 via a lens 18 when a further rotating mirror 7 is in a particular angular position relative to the instantaneous position of the mirror 6 (see Fig. 2, where "H" is the known distance between the mirror axes and "L" is the unknown distance away of the cavity wall). The device is encased in a container 1 suspended on a cable 3 connected to a winching machine for selectively adjusting the container's vertical position in the cavern, and its angular position is adjusted by drive means 4 for rotating a lower portion 1 of the container relative to a head section 2. The amount :of rotation may be sensed by a gyro-compass 5 with respect to terrestrial magnetic north/south poles. The description discloses a block diagram (Fig. 4, not shown) for processing the signals representative of the mirror's position obtained from an up/down counter controlling motors 11, 12 which rotate the mirrors 6 and 7, these position signals are then sent through the cable 3 and processed with the vertical and overall angular position of the container by a computer on the Earth's surface. The description also deals with features incorporated in the container to cope with varying magnitudes of pressure in the cavity, including a "brine" sensor to sense when the container has been lowered too far.
