Abstract

1450110 Silicate coatings DAI NIPPON TORYO CO Ltd 28 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 60004/73 Heading B2E A process of preparing an article having a silicate coating including a pattern of cracks comprises: treating a substrate with a material comprising an organic liquid having a solubility in water at 20‹C of at least 20% by weight; coating a silicate paint on the treated surface of the substrate to form a cracked silicate coating, and drying and hardening the coating of paint, the silicate paint comprising a silicate of the formula wherein x is 0.5 to 10 and M represents (i) an alkali metal (ii) an amino group R 4 -N- wherein R is H, alkanol radical or alkyl, (iii) the group -N=C(NH 2 ) 2 or the group The organic liquid may be mixed with an organic or inorganic binder, or an inorganic filler, or organic liquid of less than 20% solubility in H 2 O at 20‹C. Substrates mentioned include slate, glass, Al, Fe, steel plates, wood, plywood, mortar and plastics. The substrate may be primed with a completely dried silicate or phosphate based paint, the silicate paint being one of those below mentioned for the cracked layer and preferably a different colour to the cracked layer. The paint may include hardening agents e.g. Zn, Pb, Al powder, MgO, ZnO, PbO, CaO, Cr 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 , Mg(OH) 2 , Zn(OH) 2 , Al(OH) 3 , Pb (OH) 2 , NaF, CaF, (Ex. 14), NaSiF 6 , MgCO 3 , MgSO 4 , Mg pyrophosphate, Al pyrophosphate, and CO 2 gas and pigments, e.g. TiO 2 , red iron oxide, titanium yellow. The agent may be in aqueous solution or dispersion, with CO 2 being from the atmosphere. The agent may be mixed with silicate (e.g. one of those mentioned above) before coating or by using a two-liquid paint and mixing in situ. The binder used with the water soluble solvent may be: alkyd resin formed by condensation of a polybasic acid, a polyhydric alcohol and a fatty acid: epoxy-modified. acrylic-modified, silicone-modified, phenolmodified and styrene-modified alkyd resins; acrylic and vinyl polymers and copolymers formed from (meth)acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, styrene, vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate: bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin epoxy resin; polyurethane; nylon; melamine and urea resins; silicone resins; phenol resins; diallyl phthalate: (NH 4 )SiO 3 ; and Cellosolve (Trade Mark), butyl and ethyl silicates. The binders may be used alone or as mixtures. The filler may be SiO 2 , kaolin, diatomaceous earth. Ca CO 3 or precipitated BaSO 4 . The solvent coating or the paint coating may be applied by spraying, roller, flow, brush or electrostatic coating.
