Abstract

1450105 Dewatering sludges DAI-ICHI KOGYO SEIYAKU CO Ltd 26 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54783/73 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] Aqueous dispersions such as sewage and industrial waste water containing sludge may be gelated by forming therein a polyurethane hydrogel prepared as a result of the reaction of the water with a polyurethane prepolymer containing free isocyanate groups and which is the reaction product of a polyisocyanate with a polyether derived from a plurality of alkylene oxides, 50 to 90% by weight of which is ethylene oxide added at random to a polyalcohol having at least two terminal hydroxyl groups in an amount to provide an average molecular weight for the polyether of 1000 to 4000 per terminal hydroxyl group of the polyalcohol (see Division C3). The gel formed is more concentrated than the original dispersion and dries readily, e.g. in air. In Example 4 a prepolymer is added to a pulp sludge released from paper mills and in Example 5 sewage treated by the activated sludge process has added thereto formaldehyde, followed by polyvinylpyridinium chloride cation solidifier and finally the prepolymer to form a hydrogel.
