Abstract

1450093 Moulding foamed slabstock VITA INTERNATIONAL Ltd 29 April 1974 [4 May 1973] 21228/73 Heading B5A Apparatus for continuously producing foamed slabstock, e.g. polyether comprises a carrier medium 13 moving through a stationary moulding unit having side walls 11 and a base 10, a former 14 being provided on the base of the moulding unit to define troughs 16 at each side of the unit; in use a dispensing head 12 deposits foamable mixture into the troughs 16 so that there is an excess of foaming mixture at the side walls as the foaming mass moves along the unit, the former 14 being shaped such that the foaming mixture may flow to the central area while it is still mobile and before it has gelled, the foamed block thereby having a flat top. The great degree of foaming at the side walls serves to compensate for the frictional drag and surface tension effects on the rising foam. The former may be split longitudinally to enable its overall width to be adjusted. Pressure rollers 20 may be provided (Fig. 2) to smooth the top surface of the foam.
