Abstract

1450032 Synchronous machines EDA (OVERSEAS) Ltd 21 Dec 1973 [23 Dec 1972] 31169/72 Heading H2A In a synchronous motor/generator, the rotor 10 comprises a plurality of field coils 31 of spatially alternating polarity arranged on magnetic core elements 25 disposed around the axis of the rotor for producing a magnetic field which extends axially away from the rotor, and the stator (Fig. 6, not shown) comprises a facewound annular core of the type described in Specification 1,450,031, the rotor and stator being relatively mounted and positioned with no direct mechanical connection therebetween, e.g. as in Figs. 7, 8 (not shown) or Figs. 9, 10 (not shown) as detailed in the foregoing Specification. The elements 25, which are mounted on a backplate 12 and which have chamfered-edge pole shoes 29 fixed at their front faces, incorporate permanent magnets 27 for increasing the starting fields when the machine acts as a generator. When however the machine acts as a motor, the elements may incorporate a flat squirrel cage type auxiliary winding as in Fig. 11 (not shown) wherein radial bars (110) are shorted by outer/inner bars (112, 114) any tendency to depart from synchronous speed then being counterbalanced by an induction motor effect. The coils 31 are normally fed from a D.C. source (38, Fig. 5, not shown) via slip rings (37), but are connected so that when the source is not applied the coils form a closed circuit. Fig. 12 (not shown) relates to a machine wherein the stator core comprises a closed circular band having a relatively large central aperture.
