Abstract

1449974 Printing on aluminium T B PURSER and T A SKINNER 16 Oct 1974 [25 April 1974 10 May 1974 and 11 Sept 1974] 20799/74 18047/74 and 39590/74 Heading B6C Anodized aluminium workpieces are printed using sublimable inks on a transfer sheet, wherein the anodic oxide film is treated with a chemical sealant after transfer to protect the colouration. Typically, platens 1 and 3 with respective heaters 2, 4, are closed onto a sandwich consisting of the aluminium workpiece 6 with its anodized film 10 and the transfer sheet comprising a layer web 7, an image layer 8 in sublimable ink and a covering layer 9 of heatactivatable adhesive which is tacky at sublimation temperature and prevents the transfer sheet from slipping out of position and is also absorbed by the anodic oxide layer and helps to trap the transferred ink in the pores of the oxide film. The sealants are preferably aqueous salts, e.g. potassium dichromate or mixtures of nickel and cobalt acetates. The transfer sheet is generally printed by silk-screen or offset litho. The workpiece may be given an overall coating of dyestuff in a contrasting colour prior to transfer; if a white workpiece is required it is formed of 98% Al, 2% Mg.
