Abstract
1449868 Explosively forming moulds L R SHRUM 23 Oct 1974 [6 Nov 1973] 51531/73 Headings B3A B3Q and B3V The internal surface of a continuous casting mould of copper is explosively formed to the required profile and finish. A used mould 2 to be restored to original form, or a new east, extruded or built-up blank 2 annealed or work hardened is placed over a metal or plastics pattern 1. Coverplates 3, 4 with gaskets 5 seal the interior of the blank which is evacuated through a hole 6. Sheet, strip, rod or cord explosive 7 is arranged about the blank in contact therewith and/or stood-off by sheet rubber or a frame. The explosive extends longitudinally of the blank to provide a longitudinal detonation path when the assembly is immersed in water and ignited. Forming pressures of the order of 10 or more times the yield stress are required. The mould may be machined externally to suit the casting equipment.
