Abstract

1449852 Centrifugal pumps J D COPPEN 8 Aug 1974 [10 Aug 1973] 37932/73 Addition to 1376622 Heading F1C [Also in Division G3] The control system of the Parent Specification, in which the output pressure of a centrifugal pump 1 is controlled in response to a reference (set at 17) which is automatically adjusted if the inlet pressure is below a further reference (set at 14) to prevent cavitation or collapse of a soft inlet hose, is modified in that the pressure error signal is now only a component of a control signal for adjusting the speed of the pump. As shown, the pressure error signal at 18 is combined at 19 with the reciprocal of pump speed from a tachometer 8 and unit 9; this is to linearize the system gain (pump pressure being a non-linear function of speed). The output of 19 is connected to proportional and integrating amplifiers 20, 21 whose sum, at 22, constitutes a speed reference with which the actual speed is compared at 23, any error causing adjustment of the drive engine 3 by servo 4, 5. In the Figures, 2 is a transmission unit, and 6, 7 are pressure transducers protected by resistors or pressure snubbers 10, 12 and relief valves 11, 13. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the inlet pressure transducer comprises two on/off pressure switches, one or the other being selected according to whether hose collapse or cavitation is the limiting feature, and which cause a step change in the delivery pressure reference. If the inlet supply is restricted the system cycles the pump speed between two values alternately. In a modification of this Fig. 4, (not shown) a pair of switches are connected to an integrator which either gradually increases, holds steady, or decreases the delivery pressure reference. In a further alternative Fig. 5, (not shown) a series of sequentially operated pressure switches progressively short circuit a resistor chain, for the inlet and/or the delivery transducers. Fig. 6 (not shown), illustrates various alternatives in the system, e.g. constant speed drive with variable speed transmission, any form of prime mover, and mention is made of the control system being digital electric, fluidic or in mechanical form. There may also be a vibrational or acoustic cavitation detector to reduce the speed if this becomes excessive.
