Abstract
1449844 Surface treatment of polymers NIPPON ZEON CO Ltd 2 Oct 1973 [4 Oct 1972 22 Feb 1973 2 March 1973 31 March 1973 (2) 6 April 1973 20 April 1973] 46062/73 Headings C3C C3G and C3P The surface treatment of a rubber, a synthetic resin containing residual olefinic unsaturation, or a mixture of a saturated synthetic resin with an unsaturated resin or monomer, is effected with a mixture of an alkyl hypohalite and a compound (a) containing at least two active hydrogen atoms, or (b) containing at least one active hydrogen atom and an epoxy, sulphonyl or aldehyde group or (c) which is a hydrogen halide. The effect of the treatment is to (a) improve adhesion when the polymeric material is bonded to a substrate or coated with a paint or ink, (b) improve adhesion to a host polymer when the polymeric material is used as a filler therefor, (c) increase impermeability of articles to gasoline, (d) improve the anti-static properties, (e) improve the adsorption properties of porous bodies or powders made from such polymeric materials, (f) form ion exchange resins when the functional group has ion exchange properties, (g) improve the anti-static flame retardency and water-repellancy properties of fibres, fabrics and papers impregnated with such polymers. The treatment is generally effected by immersion of the polymer in a solution of the two agents. In examples there are treated styrene/butadiene, nitrile rubber, ABS rubber, PVC mixed with ABS, MBS or nitrile rubber, polystyrene mixed with polybutadiene, PVC containing diallyl phosphate diallyl itaconate or trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate or a mixture of such with diallyl phthalate, polybutadiene or used tyres powdered for use as a filler for PVC, or an unsaturated polyester resin, polyisoprene, particulate polybutadiene or (31) natural rubber sponge which was passed through rolls to render it open-celled before treatment and which is used as an absorbent, and fabrics or paper impregnated with latices of similar materials. The hypohalite used is t-butyl hypochlorite and the functional compounds exemplified are glycol, 2-methylpentan-2,4-diol, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, resorcinol, maleic acid, phosphoric acid, glycidyl, formamide, salicylic acid, malonic acid, glycerol, sulphuric acid/potassium bichromate, butane diol, succinic acid, boric acid 2,3-pyrazine-dicarboxylic acid and hydrobromic acid.
