Abstract

1449837 Aluminium trifluoride/aluminium oxide mixture ELKEM-SPIGERVERKET AS 11 Dec 1973 [12 Dec 1972] 57339/73 Heading C1A A process for producing an AlF 3 -containing additive suitable for use in melt electrolytic production of aluminium comprises agglomerating a mixture comprising finely divided fluorspar and silica dust which has been precipitated from the smoke from a metallurgical process for the production of metallic silicon or a silicon-rich alloy, treating the thus-formed agglomerates with a gas/steam mixture at a temperature above 1000‹ C., and reacting the liberated HF gas with Al 2 O 3 to form a mixture of AlF 3 and Al 2 O 3 suitable for use as an additive in melt electrolytic production of aluminium. The agglomerate is preferably of a size suitable for use in a fluidized bed.
