Abstract
1449799 Phenylethanolamines SMITHKLINE CORP 5 May 1975 [3 June 1974] 18669/75 Heading C2C Compounds of the general Formula I (R=H or Me, but not both Me; R 1 =C 3-5 branched chain alkyl, C 3-6 cycloalkyl, C 4-7 cycloalkylmethyl or R 2 R 3 PhCH 2 CCH 3 R 4 ; R 2 , 3 = H, OH, OMe or, taken together in adjacent positions, methylenedioxy; R 4 = H or Me) and their N,4-O-dibenzyl derivatives and salts are prepared by the following route (Ac=acetyl), optionally followed by salt formation at any appropriate stage. When one R= Me, the corresponding starting material in which one acetoxy group is replaced by methoxy is used, and when R 1 contains a hydroxy group or groups these are protected (benzyl derivatives) during the synthesis. The preparation of the starting materials and the corresponding glycols and glycol monomethyl ethers is described. The compounds of Formula I and their salts are bronchodilators, and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them in association with a carrier.
