Abstract

1449641 Uniform needled webs WIRA 31 Dec 1973 [12 Jan 1973] 1766/73 Heading D1R A fleece is needled to form a fabric of controlled weight/unit area, the fleece being drafted prior to completion of the needling and at least part of the drafting occurring where the fleece is needled, the extent of the drafting being automatically controlled in dependence at least partially upon the fleece or fabric thickness. As shown a corded web 1 is crosslapped onto conveyor belt 2 to form fleece 4, compressed by roll 18 and drafted between rolls 7, 8 and 11, 12 whilst being needled. The circumferential speed of rollers 11, 12 is initially set at 1.2 to 4 times that of rolls 7, 8. Roll 15 is spring urged against roll 12 to sense the thickness of the fabric. If a portion of the fabric is thicker than desired the displacement of roll 15 causes position transducer 17 to activate drive means 13 so as to increase the draft ratio. A thin portion leads to a reduction in the draft ratio. Many modifications are specified. Additional drafting may be obtained by increasing the speed of conveyor 2 relative to crosslapper 3. The sensing means may comprise a pair of rollers spaced from drafting rollers 11, 12. A periodic signal may be superposed upon the correction signal produced at 17 to produce a fabric with an undulating surface. The position transducer may be replaced by a pneumatic or hydraulic control or the combination of 15 and 17 replaced by thickness detection means based upon the absorption of light or beta rays. The corded fleece may be replaced by a spunbonded web.
