Abstract
1449439 Compacted vitrifiable material SAINT-GOBAIN INDUSTRIES 1 April 1975 [4 April 1974] 13223/75 Heading C1M A vitrifiable mixture for feed to a glass fusion furnace 1 comprises a compacted mass 18 of solid particles which contains substantially no. air inclusions, the compacted mass having an apparent density at least 85% of the average real density of the particulate material. The batch mixture 13 is preferably fed from hopper 10 to rotating compaction rollers 8; 9 by screw conveyer 12 through duct 5, air inclusions being evacuated through ducts 14, 15. The compacted mass 18 formed may be in the form of plates of thickness up to 2 cm., the mass sliding down shoot 19 to the molten glass 2 in furnace 1. The batch mixture 13 preferably contains neither water nor binder, and is compacted at ambient temperature. The mixture preferably contains at least 50% by, weight of. grains of size not more than 0À1 mm in size. In examples, mixtures consisting of (by weight) 59% sand, 16% sodium carbonate, 5%. chalk, 18% dolomite, and 2% sodium sulphate; were compacted at 1600 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and 2500. kg/cm.<SP>2</SP> pressure respectively, before feeding into the molten glass 2 which was at 1350‹ C. Boiler scale 4 may also be fed to the furnace 1.
