Abstract

1449245 Power steering systems HONDA GIKEN KOGYO KK 9 Oct 1973 47159/73 Heading B7H A power assisted steering system is provided with means for correcting involuntary changes in the course of a vehicle due to wind or road irregularity. The system includes an actuator 5 defining a cylinder 9 accommodating a piston 7 secured at 8 to the vehicle frame F, the actuator being connected to the vehicle wheels via tie rod L. A spool valve V controls fluid flow to and from the working chambers a and b of cylinder 9 and is integral with a piston 16 and a thrust element 22. Piston 16 defines working chambers 17 1 , 17 2 which receive fluid from a yaw detector Y through respective passages 20, 19. The thrust element 6 receives a member 6 connected to the steering wheel which acts to deflect the spool valve for steering. During use if the vehicle is turned to the right spool valve V is deflected rightwardly but the yaw rate detector nozzle moves to the left to increase pressure in chamber 17 2 and oppose the thrust on element 22. In straight travel the output from the yaw detector is normally distributed equally to passages 19 and 20. If, due to say wheel slip, the vehicle turns to a lesser degree than is demanded, the yaw rate will be insufficient to raise the pressure in chamber 17 2 to fully counteract the steering force and the valve V will be further deflected. On the other hand if over steer occurs or the vehicle is caused to yaw because of side winds the yaw detector acts to increase the pressure acting on the piston 16 to exceed the thrust exerted by member 6. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the output from the yaw rate detector is amplified. The detector Y and piston 16 are disposed externally of the actuator 5 and are hydraulically connected to a chamber (26) accommodating a piston (27) which acts in the same way as the piston 16 of the first embodiment. The amplifier includes a spool valve (29) integral with piston 16 for controlling flow to and from the chamber (26).
