Abstract

1449235 Shelling beans BUEHLER AG Gebr 31 Oct 1973 [1 Nov 1972] 50729/73 Heading A2Q Beans, especially whole soya beans, are treated to reduce the bitter taste and facilitate shelling by submitting them in a fluidized bed to rapid heating so as to vaporise moisture within the beans thereby rupturing the shells. In a preferred embodiment, the beans are fed through inlet 10 into fluidized bed apparatus 1 which includes two air supplies 16 and 19 each supplied with its own heater and air pulsator. The treated beans are then fed to rotary impact sheller 2 where they are thrown outwards on to baffle ring 42, thereby loosening the shells from the kernels. The resulting mixture of shells and kernels is separated in fluidized bed separator 3 wherein air is drawn through by suction. Some of the air may be heated. The shelled kernels are collected at 52.
