Abstract

1449208 Vibrators T S WADENSTEN 27 Dec 1973 [30 April 1973] 59823/73 Heading F2X An air-actuated, turbine-type vibrator comprises a rotor 34, the periphery of which is formed with small transverse serrations 36, e.g. gear teeth or saw teeth, mounted on a fixed shaft 23 via a ball bearing 32 and eccentrically balanced by heavy members 38, e.g. dowels or rods, mounted to one side of the rotor 34. These members 38 may be of steel, sintered heavy metal or lead and be mounted as by a press fit or threaded retention into holes in the rotor 34 which may be a die casting of zinc or aluminium. Alternatively, plastics may be used for both the rotor 34 and its housing 10. The housing 10 is formed with legs 12, 14 for mounting on a device to be vibrated and includes a rotor chamber 16 closed at one end by an integral wall 26 and at the other end by a removable cover 20 to which the shaft 23 is secured. The distal end of the shaft 23 is threaded at 24 to receive a nut 25 on assembly of the vibrator. An air inlet 44 and an air outlet 43 are formed in the housing 10, the diameter of the inlet 44 being 30-55% that of the outlet 43 and being arranged to direct the incoming pressurized air tangentially against the teeth 36 on the rotor 34. The tooth profile is of such small size that the driven rotor under normal operating conditions provides a noise level below 85 db. (Hertz). Preferably this noise level is at or below 72 db. which is much below the accepted tolerance level.
