Abstract

1448360 Di(C 6 - C 18 alkyl) aromatic hydrocarbons CONTINENTAL OIL CO 20 March 1975 [21 March 1974] 11714/75 Heading C5E Di(C 6 -C 18 alkyl) aromatic hydrocarbons for use in synthetic hydrocarbon lubricants are prepared by a two-step alkylation process comprising (1) alkylating an aromatic hydrocarbon with a C 6 -C 18 linear mono-olefin using HF as catalyst to obtain a mono alkylated aromatic and (2) alkylating said mono alkylated aromatic with a C 6 -C 18 linear mono-olefin using AlCl 3 and/or AlBr 3 as catalyst. The aromatic hydrocarbon may be benzene, toluene, xylene or ethylbenzene. The first step may be carried out at 5-100‹C. and the second step at 60- 90‹ C. The alkylate from (1) may be washed with NaOH and distilled to remove excess aromatic starting material. The final alkylate may be washed with NaOH and distilled to recover the di-alkylated product as residue.
