Abstract

1447871 Valves UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH (COURT) 7 Sept 1973 42302/73 Addition to 1327371 Heading F2V [Also in Division A5] In a butterfly valve for use as a prosthetic heart valve the passageway through the seat member 8 is of hyperboloidal form and the disc closure member 3 is elliptical in plan form and of aerofoil section. It is pivoted off-centre about an axis 4 with a concave face towards the narrower end of the passageway. The disc may have a raised part (10), Fig. 5 (not shown), to act as a flow spoiler. The valve may be provided with a suture ring 7 and can be made of vitreous carbon or of a substrate, such as graphite, coated with pyrolitic carbon.
