Abstract

1447787 Thermocouples V J JARVENPAA 29 Nov 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 55351/73 Heading H1K A thermocouple, for measuring the crystallization temperature of a metal, e.g. cast iron, comprises a pair of wires 3, e.g. of a chromiumnickel alloy and a nickel alloy respectively, having joined ends 4, the melting point of at least one of the wires lying within the temperature range of a cooling melt 1 of the metal, so that during the measurement at least one end 4 melts, but contact is maintained between the melt and the wires 3. The thickness of the wires 3 is selected so that heat conducted up the wire is insufficient to melt the wire adjacent the melt surface. The ends 4 may be coated with a thermally insulating ceramic paint 2. Following a measurement, the wires 3 are severed near the melt and rejoined for further use.
