Abstract
1447760 Separating para-xylene SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 9 Oct 1973 [9 Oct 1972] 46409/72 Heading C5E p. Xylene is preferentially adsorbed from a mixture containing at least one other C 8 aromatic by contacting the mixture with a faujasite in which the number (A) of Al atoms per unit cell is 56-71 and in which bivalent and/or trivalent metal cations are present, the remainder being potassium cations, wherein when bivalent metal atoms predominate the ratio of bivalent metal cation equivalents to the total cation equivalents lies in the range 0À0222 A minus 1À165 to 0À0222 A minus 0À965 and when trivalent metal cations predominate the ratio of trivalent metal cation equivalents to the total cation equivalents lies in the range 0À0173 A minus 0À734 to 0À0173 A minus 0À934. Preferably the natural or synthetic faujasite is ion-exchanged to replace the existing cation with K+ and subsequently part of these K<SP>+</SP> are replaced by the desired amount of bivalent and/or trivalent cations. The bivalent cations may be alkaline earth metal ions, e.g. Ca or Ba and the trivalent cations may be rare earth metal ions, e.g. Ce or La. The adsorption may be carried out in the liquid or vapour phase.
