Abstract
1447564 Insulator assembly CIBA-GEIGY AG 6 Feb 1974 [6 Feb 1973] 05545/74 Heading H2C A h.v. insulator assembly, comprises an insulator having a glass-fibre reinforced plastics core 22 encased along one portion by a skirted insulated covering 23 and a pivotable mounting G above the covering connecting the insulator to a mast 1, the pivot axis 14 making an angle # greater than 30 degrees with the longitudinal axis L of the core. The core portion nearest the mast is retained in a metal sleeve 29 by two rings 7 made of a high strength sealing compound or a loaded bonding agent, the remaining space being filled with a soft sealing compound 8. The sleeve 29 is connected at one end to a socket 21 forming part of the pivotable mounting and adapted to receive a pivot pin 20 rigidly secured to a mast 1. The end of the pin 20 which extends into the socket 21 is part-conical and has two cylindrical parts 18 of white metal alloy which are spaced apart along the axis of the core. A castellated nut 26 which is covered by a cap 19 holds the pin in the socket 21. The sleeve 29 has beads 27 at the junction 28 with the resilient casing 23, to which it is stuck. The remainder of the space is filled with a finepored foam 30. The other end of the core 22 has a cap 25 with a bead 31 that engages the casing 23, the remaining space again being filled with foam 30. The tags 32 with bores 33 serve to secure clamping means for the conductor (not shown). The core has rounded edges and two parallel flat sides the widths of which decrease towards the skirted insulated end, whereas the radius and a length of the rounded edges are constant. Thus the thickness of the core between the parallel sides is constant and its cross-section becomes nearly circular near the conductor end. In another embodiment shown in Fig. 2 the thick end of a conical core 34 is anchored by two metal rings 35a and 35b spaced apart by a metal sleeve 35, the end face of ring 35b being closed by a cover. The pivot pins 40, secured to a small crossarm 38 define the horizontal pivot axis 14. Bearing sockets 41 which receive the pins 40 are rigidly connected via members 42 to a fork-shaped coupling device 43 which together form a pivotable mounting 44, releasably connected to rings 35a and 35b. Ring 35b is welded to a tag 45 which extends into the fork of 43 and held by pin 46. A stirrup shaped member 47 has its forked ends secured to links or tags (48) which are secured to ring 35a. In the case of large insulators the case 34 is, e.g. laminated with the interfaces of the glassfibre reinforced panels parallel to the plane of Fig. 2 and these panels may be interposed by panels of re-inforced high-strength organic plastics.
