Abstract

1447561 Speculum R D DAVIS 4 Dec 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 56193/73 Heading A5R A vaginal speculum 10 comprises a U- shaped trough 24 extending downwards from the rear edge of an arcuate blade 12, a flexible stainless steel wire or plastics fenestrated basket 34 being located in the trough 24 to pass fluid while retaining tissue. The basket receiver 40 forms more than a semi-circle in cross-section and releasably retains the basket 34 on a lower shoulder 44 while an upper shoulder 46 directs fluid into the basket. Metal tubes 50, 51 soldered to side edges 16, 17 respectively of the concave top surface 19 of the blade each carry a fibre optic bundle which is coupled at 55 to a flexible light conducting non-sterilisable tube 56 and thence to a light source. The weight of the bulbous portion 32 and the inclination of the blade 12 at 60‹ to the trough 24 provides selfretention when the retractor is inserted within the lower area of the vagina.
