Abstract
1447220 Plastics coated containers DART INDUSTRIES INC 10 April 1975 [2 May 1974] 14879/75 Heading B2E A labelled container has a continuous plastics coating covering the label and at least part of the container surface, the coating being transparent or translucent at least in the region of the label. The container may be a bottle, jar, tumbler or carton and is preferably of glass, and the label may be of paper, plastics, cloth, foil or foil-paper. In a preferred method, the container is preheated to 100-250F, e.g. during washing, and is undercoated with aqueous polyacrylic acid by roller, dipping or spraying. After partial drying, the label is applied, either to the still-tacky undercoat or by means of a compatible adhesive, e.g. concentrated aqueous polyacrylic acid. The container is then pre-heated to 300-600F and coated with polyethylene by fluidised bed or electrostatic spraying or by dipping, rolling or brushing from solution. If no undercoat has been applied, the coating may include polyacrylic acid and/or vinyl acetate polymers. The coating is cured and/or tempered by reheating and quenching to fix it and enhance its clarity. Various surface effects may be obtained and the coating may include a reflective filler. Specified thicknesses are: undercoat <.001 inch; coating .004-.035 inch.
