Abstract

1447179 Shearing KOBE STEEL Ltd 3 June 1974 [5 June 1973 11 Aug 1973 22 Dec 1973 (2) 22 March 1974] 24539/74 Heading B3W Apparatus for shearing the transverse members 3<SP>1</SP> of wire mesh 3 comprises shearing edges 1, 2, a groove 10, extending downstream from and parallel to the cutting line, through which the mesh passes and a drive pawl device 11 located adjacent the open side of the groove and adapted to engage a longitudinal member 3<SP>11</SP> and drive the transverse members forward to advance the mesh in a direction parallel to the groove so that successive transverse members are sheared by the edges 1, 2. The drive pawl device comprises pawls 13 pivoted to a driven chain 12 and having follower rolls 17 engaging cam 14 to restrict their pivoting in one direction so that they drive the mesh. At the beginning of a shearing operation the device 11 is adjusted relative to the cutting line by means of a screw 19 so that a longitudinal member 3<SP>11</SP> a required distance from the cutting line engages in a central slot 15 in the pawls. The chain motor is then actuated to bring the front face of at least one pawl against a transverse member 3<SP>1</SP>. Should a member 3<SP>1</SP> engage the rear face of a pawl the pawl will pivot out of the way. The member 3<SP>11</SP> is kept in the slots 15 by a cover 20. The support 8 of a fixed upper blade 1 is mounted on a member 9 fixed to the main frame 4. The movable blade 2 is mounted in the frame 4 for orbital movement by eccentrics 5, 6 so that it moves generally in the feed direction during shearing. The groove 10 is formed by the lower surface of the support 8, the upper surface of the frame 4 and a side face of the member 9. As the members 3<SP>1</SP> of the mesh is cut, the stock to the right of the blades rides up an inclined upper surface of the member 9, Fig. 1.
