1446624 Outboard drives OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 6 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56605/73 Heading B7V An outboard marine propulsion unit 23 is mounted on a king pin 21 for steering movements relative to a swivel bracket 19 which is in turn mounted for vertical swinging movement about a tilt pin 17 relative to a bracket 13 securable to the transom 15 of a boat, forward thrust of the unit 23 being transmitted by way of an abutment 55 on the swivel bracket 19 engaging with a thrust element 53 which is adjustable in position to set the trim of the propulsion unit 23 on the boat, this adjustment being effected by mounting the thrust element 53 on an elongate bracket 81, 83 for pivotal movement about the tilt pin 17, the lower end 85 of the bracket 81, 83 having an aperture 87 to receive the shank of a bolt 89 screwed into a movable piston-rod of an hydraulic trim cylinder and piston assembly 59, actuation of the piston rod 61 by means of a reversible pump 71 thus setting the trim position of the propulsion unit 23. The bolt 89 has a head 91 which retains the bracket 81, 83 in engagement with the piston-rod 61. A separately actuatable hydraulic cylinder and piston tilt assembly 103 is provided to raise the unit 23 about the pin 17 clear of the water when desired, and this action does not disturb the trim setting of the thrust element 53. The cylinder of the assembly 103 is provided with an aperture containing a spring- loaded check valve which will allow the propulsion unit 23 to transmit reverse thrust to the boat, but will open to cushion the effect of the propeller 27 of the unit 23 striking an underwater obstruction. In an alternative embodiment the hydraulic assembly 103 is replaced by an equivalently acting manually releasable catch engaging the thrust element 58, a shock absorber also being provided to cushion movement of the propulsion unit on striking an obstruction.
