Abstract
1446591 Catalytic converter for exhaust gas BRITISH LEYLAND MOTOR CORP Ltd 5 Dec 1973 [6 Jan 1973] 910/73 Heading B1F A method of fabricating a catalytic device for an exhaust system for an internal-combustion engine comprises the steps of disposing a layer of thermal insulating material about the periphery of a unitary refractory catalyst support member, wrapping around the member and the layer a sheet of casing material, tensioning the sheet around the member to compress the layer substantially uniformly, and securing the sheet to itself to provide a gastight enclosure about the member. The catalyst support may be a ceramic block having interstitial passages the walls of which are coated with catalyst, the insulating material may be that identified by the Registered Trade Mark "Fiberfrax", and the casing may be of stainless steel. Tension may be applied by gripping the "tails" of the wrapping with a suitable tool, by the use of spring clips, or by welding the "tails" to a bar which can be rotated; the casing is then welded while under tension.
