Abstract
1446512 Code reader FERRANTI-PACKARD Ltd 19 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 31997/74 Addition to 1417439 Heading G4M The code reader of the parent Specification 1,417,439 contains a circuit compensating for base level variations in the television camera which scans an area through which a coded label passes. The video signal S, which has a tendency to rise above the base level (Fig. 7) possibly to a level higher than a data level is fed to one terminal of an A/D converter and also to an amplifier 03. The amplifier compensates for losses in the following circuitry and clips noise peaks. The amplifier feeds a peak clipper 04 which via a rectifier 05 feeds capacitor 06 and resistor 07 forming a peak follower. The input to the potentiometer O8 is represented by dotted line D in Fig. 7 and its output is dotted line PL. This is fed to the A/D converter which produces true and inverted outputs D, I forming binary signals indicating when line PL is above or below line S or vice versa. Alternatively the video signal is fed to a differentiating circuit 30 which via diodes 32, 34 feeds level discriminator 38 and via an inverter level discriminator 39. These discriminators are responsive to pulses from the differentiator responding to transitions in the video signal at the boundaries between light and dark markings on the label. The discriminators set and reset a flip-flop to produce binary pulses.
