Abstract

1446454 Poly(amino acid) films and fibres AJINOMOTO CO Inc 18 Oct 1973 [18 Oct 1972] 48492/73 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] A process for modifying a shaped article of a poly(aminoacid) having an acidic aminoacid-#- ester side chain comprises containing the article with a polyamine having at least 2 primary NH 2 groups to amidate some of the side-chain ester groups and, thereafter converting some or all of the unreacted ester groups to acid or salt groups by saponification with an aqueous alkali. Specified shaped articles are films, tubes, flakes, capsules, fibres, hollow filaments and fabrics. The poly(aminoacid) may be a homopolymer of an acidic aminoacid- #-ester or a copolymer thereof with another such ester or a neutral α-aminoacid; the polyamine may be hydrazine or an aliphatic, alicyclic, heterocyclic or aromatic polyamine and may be used as a solution in a solvent which does not saponify or dissolve the polymer but desirably swells it so that reaction ocurs throughout the polymer cross-section. Numerous monoxides, polyamines and solvents are specified. The treatment is stated to convert the article to a substantially waterinsoluble amphoteric electrolyte with hydrophilic properties. In specific examples (1) a 32 Á film of poly-γ- methyl - D - glutamate is amidated with hydrazine; (2) a 20 Á film of an L-alanine/L- aspartic acid-#-benzyl ester 1 : 4 copolymer is aminated with hexamethylene diamine, 1,3- diamino - propanol or -cyclohexane, iminobispropylamine and 3,9-bis(aminoethyl) spiroli methadioxane; (3) an L-leucine/L-glntamic and - γ - methyl ester 1 : 3 copolymer is amidated with ethylene diamine to give a semipermeable membrane, and (4) filaments of poly- L - glutamic acid - γ - methyl - ester (wound on a polyethylene plate) are amidated with diethylene triamine. In all examples saponification is effected with aqueous methanolic NaOH (followed by aqueous methanolic HCl where the acid form is required).
