Abstract

1401215 Semi permeable membrane AJINOMOTO CO INC 5 July 1972 [5 July 1971] 31473/72 Heading B1X [Also in Division C3] Solid poly(aminoacids) containing repeating aspatic or glutamic acid units are modified by treatment with a compound containing at least one isocyanate group. The poly(aminoacid) may be obtained by saponifying a polyaminoacid containing aspatic or glutamic acid omega-ester units and may be a homopolymer, a copolymer of the acid with its omega-ester or other amino acid units or a mixture of such homo- or co-polymer with a different polyamino acid. Various possible other acids are specified. The isocyanate may be aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic and may be a methane prepolymer. The solid polymer may be in the form of a film, tube, hollow filament, fibre, woven or knitted fabric, chip, flake, capsule or powder. The polymer may be blended with various other condensation, addition or natural polymers and may contain plasticisers, fillers or colouring agents. The treated polymers are stated to be useful for surgical membranes, artificial skin, artificial kidney membranes, surgical sutures, gauze and membranes for reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration. Ex-4 illustrates dialysis of egg albumen.
