Abstract

1446444 Golf club shafts ALDILA INC 8 Aug 1973 [27 April 1973] 37664/73 Heading A6D A tapered tubular golf club shaft having uniform wall thickness includes superposed carbon fibre layers, the fibres being helically arranged in at least one of the layers, some of the fibres in each layer extending from end to end of the shaft, all the fibres of all the layers being embedded in and bodned together by a plastics, e.g. epoxy material. Each layer may comprise a slightly-tapering strip, cut from a preformed tape of parallel carbon fibres impregnated with thermo-settable epoxy resin. Four such strips are helically wound on a tapered mandrel, adjacent layers being of opposite hand. A fifth layer of fibres extending along the shaft axis is applied and is followed by four more helical layers and a final longitudinal layer. During assembly of the layers, intermediate compression steps, involving both the rolling of the covered mandrel between relatively reciprocating parallel platens and the application and subsequent removal of tape wound under tension, are carried out. The assembly of layers is covered by a wrapping of aluminium foil and then a tape, helically wound under tension. The covered mandrel is then heated in an oven to cure the resin. The helically wound tape, the aluminium foil and the mandrel are then removed. The outer surface of the shaft is finally ground and given two coats of polyurethane paint. A wooden club head may be secured to the shaft by epoxy adhesive, and the region of the join may then be wrapped, Figs. 1-4 (not shown).
