Abstract

1446101 Broaches J O BILLUPS 30 July 1974 33580/74 Heading B3L A tool comprises a body 15 having a number of multi-tooth modules, of length L as shown, each module having a given total width W, there being provided a given number of tooth cutting edges 16, 17, 18 in each module arranged such that no two cutting edges within any one module are in alignment in a direction either parallel or perpendicular to the relative motion between the module and workpiece 14, the width of each cutting edge constituting a fraction of said given width, wherein said fraction is equal to said given width divided by said given number of tooth cutting edges, viz. w/3, and the depth of cut T is such that the cross-sectional area of a generated chip approaches a square. As shown, the module has three teeth and the workpiece is shown before and after the cutting action of each tooth.
