Abstract

1445997 Sulphated ethoxylated alcohols UNILEVER Ltd 6 Nov 1974 [6 Nov 1973] 51517/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] In a process of sulphating ethoxylated secondary alcohols having the general formula R(OCH 2 CH 2 ) n OH where R is a secondary alkyl radical having from 10 to 20 carbon atoms and n is from 1 to 9, the ethoxylate is formed into a thin flowing film maintained at a temperature not above 80‹ C. and contacted for a period of time up to 30 seconds with a stream of an SO 3 /diluent gas mixture having an SO 3 concentration of from 1 to 4% volume moving at a velocity up to 130 feet per second; the molar ratio or SO 3 to ethoxylate being less than 1À4 to 1. The product is preferably immediately neutralized.
