The comb engages the film at the point where it comes into engagement with the surface of the roller 3 and an accurate nip is maintained by the bar 13 supporting the comb being mounted in a frame comprising end plates 14A and 14B interconnected by rods 16 and 17 to form a rigid assembly and the end plates 14A and 14B carrying runners 20 in the form of light wheels turning on frictionless bearings and engaging the surface of the chill roller 3. The supporting bar 13 is formed at each end with a shank 25 fitted with a tension spring 30 which biases the end plates and connecting rods against the surface of roller 3. The arrangement may be adjusted by the use of the elongated slot 36 in arm 37 which may be pivoted to allow the frame to be swung from its operating position. The pins 11 of the profiling comb are braced close to their tips by means of a bar 50 extending parallel with the length of the comb and having accurately pitched grooves (54, Fig. 3) corresponding to the correct spacing 11. The bracing bar 50 is stressed so as to maintain the points of the pins in a straight line by a series of screws two of which are shown as 51 and 52, the screw 51 and alternate screws passing through threaded holes in bar 13 and engaging the rear of bar 50 and the screw 52 and the remainder passing through plain holes in 13 and into tapped holes in 50. An alternative arrangement (Fig. 4) provides localized adjustment of body 12 in which shorter pins are used and bar 50 is eliminated. In this arrangement, similar uniformly spaced screws (e.g. 55) pass through plain holes in bar 13 and into tapped holes in body 12. The heads of the screws (55) are trapped between the body of bar 13 and a plate (56) which extends along the length of bar 13 and is fixed thereto at intervals by bolts (57) screws (55) are socket headed and the plate (56) is formed with a series of holes (60) in register with the sockets in the screws for the insertion of a key. Since the head of each screw is incapable of axial movement, movement in one direction or the other exists either a thrust or pull on the body 12.
