1445480 Fluid-resistance brakes EXPERIMENTAL PROTZVODSTVO PO RAZRABOTKE I IZGOTOVLENIJU SREDSTV MEKHANIZATSII V STROITELSTVE TRESTA "KIEVORGSTROI" ORDENA LENINA GLAVKIEVGORSTROYA 24 Dec 1974 55883/74 Heading F2E [Also in Division B8] An arrangement for protecting men working above ground against falling to the ground, comprises a drum 3 secured to structure, and from which a cable 4 extends to the worker's belt, the drum being centrifugally coupled to an hydraulic pump 9 upon rapid unwinding of the cable from the drum due to a falling workman, to retard his descent, which may selectively be limited by a drum rotation limiter 14, 15. The drum 3 is normally freely mounted on a shaft 2 and is unwound against a return coil spring 5. Upon overspeed rotation of the drum, pivoted members 6 thereon centrifuge out into engagement with stops 8 secured to the shaft 2 which has one end secured to the pump 9 in an hydraulic circuit 10, whereupon shaft and drum rotation is retarded. During the initial period of operation of the hydraulic system, a pressure relief valve 11 therein is lifted under the action of overpressure in the system to release the pressure so that the initial retardation force applied to the falling workman is reduced. The drum rotation limiter comprises a slotted lever 12 selectively secured to the other end of the shaft 2 and slideably receiving in the slot 13, a pin 15 which also slideably engages a spiral groove 14 in the arrangement casing 1, rotation of the shaft 2 being limited by a stop 16 on the casing 1 engageable by the pin 15 when the latter reaches the inner end of the groove 14.
