Abstract
1444955 Position encoding G SELAM 23 July 1973 [31 July 1972 7 Dec 1972] 34976/73 Heading H3H [Also in Division G3] A device for determining the position of a mobile object movable along at least one path comprises a position encoder attached to the object and a position information support extending along the path so that it can be read by the encoder. The information support may be a girder 34 with position codes on 3 faces. The reading heads may sense the information optically, magnetically, capacitatively, piezoelectrically or by direct electrical contact. As shown, the reading heads 39, 40, 41 are mounted in a case 32 which nearly surrounds girder 34 and is spaced therefrom by spring mounted wheels 44. The position along the girder is encoded in 12 track binary with 4 tracks on each face 34a, 34b, 34c of the girder and each reading head has four heads, e.g. 39a-39d. The encoder may be used for driving the movable object to the desired position by setting the desired position on three comparators (4 lines each) feeding the signals from heads 39, 40, 41 to the respective comparators and using the comparator outputs to control speed, direction and braking.
