Abstract

1444606 Screwing-up and unscrewing nuts KLOCKNER WERKE AG 30 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 40874/73 Heading B3N [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for pre-tensioning several bolts 10 on a common pitch circle, such as bolts securing the flange 11 of a nuclear reactor pressure vessel, and for screwing and unscrewing the nuts 13 of the bolts 10, includes a supporting ring 14 which can be supported on the flange 11 by legs 15, the ring 14 carrying bolt-tensioning cylinders 16 the force of which is transmitted to the bolts 10 by clamps 18, nut screwing and unscrewing drives 21, 22, 25 the pinions 21 of which are engageable with gear teeth 20 on the nuts 13, retaining pawls 34 engageable in annular grooves 33 of the nuts 13, and lifting jacks 28 to lift the apparatus and any unscrewed nuts clear of the bolts 10. The jaws of clamps 18 engage grooved end portions 19 of the bolts under hydraulic pressure. Hydraulic rams 30 are pressurized to move the screwing drive units against return springs 32 so that their pinions 21 mesh with the gears 20 or the nuts 13. These drive units are powered by rotating field magnets 23. The pawls 34, which enable the nuts to be lifted off their bolts, are urged into the nut grooves 33 by springs 38 in hydraulic rams 37. The rams are pressurized via lines 36 to retract the pawls. The lifting jacks 28 are screw jacks driven by motors 26. For each bolt 10, the two tensioning cylinders 16 can be replaced by a single ram (39) coaxially surrounding the upper part of the bolt (Fig. 4, not shown). The nuts are slackened with the bolts tensioned by the tensioning cylinders 16 (or 39), then the clamps 18 are released, the pawls 34 engaged in the nut grooves 33, and the apparatus raised by the lifting jacks 28 while the nuts are unscrewed by their drive units.
