Abstract
1444582 Welding by pressure CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 8 April 1974 [5 May 1973] 21491/73 Heading B3R In explosively welding a first surface to a second surface which overlaps the first surface, a body of substantially incompressible solid or liquid material is provided adjacent the boundary of the first surface beyond which the second extends to present a third surface forming substantially an extension of the first surface, an explosive force is applied to the second surface opposite the first surface and a portion of the third surface to weld the first and second surfaces and after welding, liquid material is removed by flow and solid material while deforming it or after it has been disintegrated. A tube 12, in an embodiment, extends through an aperture in a tube plate 10 and extends beyond the upper surface of the tube plate. A pre-cast ring 22 of bottle glass within a steel ring 24 is provided on the upper surface of the tubeplate about the tube 12 and the tube 12 is explosively welded within the tube plate aperture, the glass ring supporting the tube. The glass may cast in situ. Any glass which does not shatter during welding is shattered by ultrasonic vibrations and removed. Alternatively a liquid, e.g. water, may be provided between the tube ring 24, an 0-ring seal being provided at the lower face of the tube plate, and after welding the water may be tipped away. Again, a rubber ring may be used instead of the glass ring, or alumina or silica could be used. The tube may be welded to a sleeve within the tube plate bore or tubes may be welded together. Support material may be provided next to two boundaries of the first surface.
