Abstract

1444577 Thermally insulated pipes BRUUN & SORENSEN Ltd 24 Oct 1974 [1 Nov 1973 19 Feb 1974] 50744/73 and 7582/74 Heading F2P An article-particularly a pipe 10-is thermally insulated by being surrounded by a plurality of hollow spherical balls 14, preferably of a poor thermal conductor such as silica, PVC or polyethylene, and having a diameter from 5 to 300 microns. The balls may be coated or may have the spaces therebetween filled with an infill material 16; bitumen is preferred as the coating or infill material but asphalt or coal tar pitch may also be used, possibly in a mix, or mixed with natural or synthetic rubber. A thermally insulated pipe may be provided with an outer sheath 18 of PVC or cardboard or may, for example, be supported within a concrete duct 24 and surrounded by the insulating material; drains 27 may also be provided in the duct. A method of preparing an insulated pipe (Fig. 5, not shown) comprises centring the pipe vertically within a sheath (46), and pouring in the insulating material (48).
