Abstract

1444478 Carbon tapes and composites CELANESE CORP 2 April 1974 [3 April 1973] 14540/74 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions D1 and B5] A carbon tape having an open, plain weave construction is prepared by passing a tape made of an organic polymeric fibrous material under tension in the direction of its length through a series of heating zones, to form a fibrous tape which contains #90% carbon by weight, the initial tape having a warp consisting of a plurality of substantially parallel, but not contiguous, fibres coextensive with the length of the tape, and having a fibrous weft of 2-8 picks per inch, the proportion of warp ends to weft picks per square inch being greater than 1 : 1. A typical tape is illustrated (Fig. 1). After carbonization, one or more layers of the tape may be impregnated with a thermosetting resin (e.g. an aromatic polyimide), to form a pervious low density composite article. Figs. 2 and 3 show exploded and non-exploded arrangements respectively of the tape in typical composites.
