Abstract

1444407 Monoesters of rosanicin SCHERICO Ltd 8 Nov 1973 [15 Nov 1972] 51933/73 Heading C2C Novel compounds (I) and the acid addition salts thereof are prepared by solvolysis of a 3,21-diester of rosanicin in either (i) a medium comprising water and a water-miscible solvent, or (ii) an anhydrous alcohol. Esters prepared are those in which the acyl group is acetyl, propionyl, valeryl or benzoyl. Rosanicin 2<SP>1</SP>-acetate-3-valerate is prepared by reacting rosanicin-2-acetate with valeric anhydride. Compounds I show antibacterial activity and form with a carrier or excipient a pharmaceutical composition which may be administered orally, parenterally, rectally or topically. They may also be used in the cleaning of contaminated surfaces.
