Abstract

1444070 Alumina; Bayer process MITSUI MINING & SMELTING CO Ltd 24 July 1974 [14 June 1974] 32691/74 Heading C1A In the Bayer process, the alkaline digestion of goethite-containing bauxite is carried out at a temperature of 270‹ to 350‹ C. in the presence of an organic substance which is capable of reducing goethite to magnetite at the temperature of the digestion. Such organic substances may be present in the bauxite (e.g. humus or bitumen) and preferably impart a colour to the extract solution which indicates their concentration; they are preferably present in a concentration of 5 g./l. (calculated as carbon) or less. The caustic alkali used in the digestion may be the solution obtained after aluminium hydroxide is deposited from the sodium aluminate solution formed during the digestion.
