Abstract

1443823 Compression moulding UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 13 March 1974 [28 March 1973 10 Dec 1973 31 Jan 1974] 14983/73 57194/73 and 4627/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division G6] Particulate material such as nuclear fuel particles coated with deformable matrix material is compacted to provide a body of elongated form in a die cavity 5 by opposed pairs of rams 6 extending the full length of the cavity and radially movable in chambers 20 by hydraulic means 25, the rams being shaped so as to combine with the cavity to define the shape of the body. Additional compaction may be provided by opposed rams movable axially of the cavity. The particulate material may comprise kernels 15 of sintered uranium dioxide coated with layers of pyrocarbon 16, 18, silicon carbide 17 and graphite 19. A tube may be formed by disposing a mandrel lengthwise of the cavity; the tube may be of carbon to enclose a central core containing nuclear fuel also compacted as described, and the parts combined by further compaction. The die 4a of Fig. 5 includes electric heaters 38 on opposite sides and opposed rams 6a manually actuated radially of a die cavity 5a by a rotary handle 45 which moves plates 39, 40 and the rams towards or away from each other. Axial rams, not shown, are provided and moved in cylindrical guides.
